Hi folks! There’s a free Tier 2 gothic horror Adventure Frame waiting for you at the bottom of this post. It’s inspired by, and in conversation with, Jack Panic’s outstanding [**Strahd Must Die!*](https://dngnclub.itch.io/strahd-must-die?ref=daggerheartdispatch.com) Campagin Frame and works as a drop in adventure. We call it [**Ilyana Must Live!*](#IML) and, similar to Jack, we’re plunging into creepy settings with craven people doing awful things. Enjoy!

**IT IS OCTOBER.** That means it’s time to talk about all things spooky when it comes to Daggerheart, starting with the question—can you do horror in Daggerheart?

As a heroic TTRPG, many of its mechanics run counter to classic horror tropes. Thresholds mean you can’t one-shot things and they can’t one-shot you. Large, overwhelming battles don’t really mean much to the action economy. And above all, rules-as-written, a PC does not have to die if they choose to Avoid Death.

So how do you bring terror to the table in a system with these mechanics or other, similar systems?

####

There are a lot of folks in the TTRPG space that discuss this ad nauseam. A few common statements: remove the mechanics. Use monsters the party cannot win against. Mood matters most. Threaten things other than the party.

The last two really speak to Daggerheart as a system and don’t interfere with the core mechanics of the game. You could tell your players "you cannot Avoid Death in this adventure." You could use the Massive damage optional rule and make sure that every time you deal damage, you roll a fist full of dice. You could remove the rolling altogether and just narrate the outcomes, telling your players they just took severe damage.

As a system, I believe Daggerheart could handle all of it. But putting the character in danger isn't the same as creating a sense of fear at the table.

####

Instead of fighting the system, make it work for you. Start with collaboration. When you ask questions, use ones that can only be answered by fearful, trembling lips. “What is it about this portrait of the Countess that unsettles you?”, “Where do you think the smell of death is coming from?”, or my personal favorite, “Tell me about a childhood nightmare your character had often.” Let your players be the authors of their own fear. The fear center of the brain activates even when it is imagined and the more you bring those thoughts to the forefront, the more likely your players are to genuinely feel afraid. So set the mood by letting your players tell you what it is about this mundane village that frightens them.

One of the things that ramps up the terror is the very visible accumulation of Fear. It is almost as good a signpost as you can get about how many ways things can go wrong for the PCs. But we can do better.

When you want to bring horror to the PCs, put the threat of losing in front of them. Make them struggle to win under tense conditions by putting a countdown in front of them. Tell them what is at stake if this countdown triggers and let the panic set in. But what’s the right number? How will you know? I am here to tell you it probably doesn’t matter as long as the number isn’t absurdly high or low because you choose when it ticks down. Spend a Fear to tick it down if the PCs are in a comfortable spot to ratchet up the tension or if they’ve triggered its tick down reaction or if they’ve done something that would make whatever that countdown represents get closer to happening.

Obviously, it wouldn’t be a Deconstructed article if I didn’t talk about Adversaries. Which ones you choose or design matters, both in the narrative and the mechanics. You want to use powerful monsters with features that put your PCs on their back feet. You also want to tap into their fears (like the Flickerfly's Mind Dance feature).

You might consider going up a tier. That’s not a bad idea, as long as you know what you’re doing. For example: you could have a level 4 party going against a Vampire, which is a Tier 3 Standard. If you look at its numbers though, that's just a VERY beefy Tier 2 Bruiser. A Head Vampire with a few more HP might make for a pretty powerful Solo. It can become a balance between difficulty and frustration if you use higher tier adversaries, so remember—the point is to scare them. Not scar them. Bring the nightmares you asked about earlier to bear just as much as the damage your Adversaries are doing.

####

Lastly, put it all together by creating a goal the PCs must try to reach and decide on the complications stopping them. Let your players know the vibe you're going for and check in with them to make sure everyone is on the same page. Then start putting spooky ideas together. If you’re looking for mechanics that might bring some of that fear from [*How’s My Driving?*](https://dngnclub.itch.io/hows-my-driving?ref=daggerheartdispatch.com) to the table, Jack Panic has you covered in [*Strahd Must Die!* ](https://dngnclub.itch.io/strahd-must-die?ref=daggerheartdispatch.com)

We were inspired by his work, and sat down to put together a companion adventure you can use to tell the harrowing tale of a kidnapped villager and the heroes sent to rescue her. Below you’ll find a Tier 2 Adventure, *Ilyana Must Live!,* set in the riverside village of Villisara. Can your PCs rescue Ilyana before she is lost to the horrors that lurk in the mists?
